George Washington Trail In West Virginia

SITE VIII:
GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE FRENCH & INDIAN WAR

[ area map ]

As a young officer in the French and Indian War, Washington marched his militia through Romney in Hampshire County and ordered a string of forts built along the South Branch of the Potomac in 1755 to protect the frontier. One at Fort Ashby in Mineral County still stands. The area returned the favor and provided beef to feed Washington's soldiers during both the French and Indian War and later at Valley Forge.

Washington passed through Romney on various occasions in later years as he studied the navigation potential of the Potomac River.
