He wrote in his journal that: &quot;the Trough is a couple of ledges of mountain impassable running side and side together for about 7 or 8 miles and the river down between them.&quot; Today, the Trough in Hampshire County still encloses the South Branch of the Potomac River and is still impassable except by river or railroad. Float trips are a popular pastime but the favorite way through is on the Potomac Eagle excursion train. The train ride starts just outside of Romney, a town Washington knew well, and next door to Wappocomo, a large brick colonial house built in 1774 and still in the hands of the original family.
